Bunscoil Mhuire is a 27 teacher school and this includes our principal Eoghan Rua O’Neill. Teachers are ably assisted by 7 Special Needs Assistants (SNAs). We have over 500 children in our school and our policy is to have very small classes in the Junior Cycle i.e. from Junior Infants to 2nd Class.
The small numbers have enabled us to put in place exciting initiatives in these classes. One of these projects is Literacy Lift Off. The aim of the programme is to introduce the children to a wide range of reading material at a level suitable to their ability. Children work in small groups throughout each lesson and have three adults to assist them in the classroom. Each thirty minute lesson allows the children to read a book they are familiar with and introduces them to a new book. The children also do some phonics work and a written activity during the class.
3rd to 6th class pupils engage in modules of Peer Tutoring. The children derive great pleasure from this programme and their literacy shows a significant improvement.
